Top most searched people on Google in 2024Thailand has made substantial progress in reducing carbon emissions and has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, says the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE). Phirun Saiyasitpanich, DCCE director-general, said Thailand, as a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), recently submitted its First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) to the UNFCCC secretariat. The report outlines Thailand's progress in combating climate change, highlighting actions taken to meet global climate commitments and enabling access to technology, expertise, and international funding. Thailand, the report said, emitted 278,039.73 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (ktCO2eq) of greenhouse gases, including emissions from forestry and land use, and 385,941.14 ktCO2eq excluding these sectors. The country reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 60.33 MtCO2eq in 2021 and 65.23 MtCO2eq in 2022, aligning with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Thailand has achieved 30.4% of its NDC target compared to business-as-usual (BAU) projections, as stipulated under Article 4 of the Paris Agreement. Mr Phirun emphasised the need to raise this target to 40% in the near future to mitigate the risks of global warming. In a significant milestone, Thailand transferred 1,916 tCO2eq of international carbon credits, marking its first year of such transfers. The report also highlighted pilot projects in six fields across six provinces to combat climate change. To date, Thailand has received USD $1.1 billion (38.6 billion baht) in international financial support to develop and distribute climate-related technologies. To achieve its 2050 carbon neutrality goal and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, Thailand must address emissions from key sectors such as energy, transport, industry, and agriculture. This ain’t Texas-this is buffering. As Beyoncé gets ready to perform during the Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens Christmas Day halftime show at NRG Stadium in her hometown of Houston, she couldn’t help but poke a bit of fun at Netflix, who will be live-streaming the game on their platform. In a video posted to her social media accounts Dec. 24, the Grammy winner could be seen sitting on a football field wearing a flowing cape, big hat and sunglasses and strumming a banjo to the tune of her hit “Texas Hold ‘Em.” As Beyoncé removes her sunglasses, the camera zooms in on her face before giving viewers the classic Netflix red circle buffer. The “Diva” singer-who shares children Blue Ivy Carter, 12, and twins Rumi Carter and Sir Carter, 7, with husband Jay-Z-can then be heard laughing over the buffer, before the video cuts to a reminder about the game. “I’m sending you big joy and love on this Cowboy Christmas Eve,” the 43-year-old wrote alongside the promo. “I’ll see y’all tomorrow, in my city HTX.” And of course fans were delighted by the trolling, with Netflix even jumping in to share their own thoughts. “now hold on,” they wrote in the comments of her video on X, formerly Twitter, before changing their bio on the platform to, “roasted by beyoncé 12.24.25.” Beyoncé’s halftime performance marks the first time she’s taken the stage since wrapping her Renaissance World Tour in October 2023, and also the first since the March release of her latest album, Cowboy Carter. And while the Texans-Ravens game will start streaming on Netflix at 4:30pm, fans will still have three hours to catch her performance on the platform after the game ends, according to Variety. But it’s not all about football for Beyoncé, as mom Tina Knowles recently shared a few of the family’s holiday traditions that they’ll be enjoying this year. “For the kids, we buy toys just like in any other family,” she told E! News. “That’s what they like.” And it’s not just gifts they’ll be enjoying, as Tina has another recipe for success up her sleeve, noting she’ll be, “making my amazing gumbo.” “I just made it for Thanksgiving,” she added, “it was so many people that came over. Just good food and company and family.”
California urges Buttigeg to grant last-minute cash for LA-SF bullet train as DOGE loomsThe Canada Games Centre has closed both of its rinks due to an issue with one of the facility’s ice plant compressors. “The decision has been made to cancel all ice bookings as well as any drop-in ice activities with the exception of the Arctic Edge Skating Club’s Gold Nugget Competition,” read a Dec. 6 press release. “Impacted user groups have been notified directly by Facility Bookings staff.” Darrell Peters is the operations supervisor at the Canada Games Centre. He told the News that one of the rink’s three compressors went out of commission on Wednesday, Dec. 4. “An instrument panel that’s on the compressor is not working, it’s dead. So that compressor is no longer working,” he said. The warm conditions that Whitehorse has been experiencing have complicated the matter further: Peters said operations cannot keep up with the flooding of the ice. He said the operations have not been flooding after every period of hockey since Dec. 4 because the ice wasn’t setting quickly enough. “So what’s happening is our ice is getting slimmer and slimmer,” he said. The ice is usually maintained at an inch-and-three-quarters to two inches, but the ice level is now down to an inch-and-a-quarter. “It’ll keep getting lower, and then we’ll lose our lines on the ice, and then it’s a problem,” said Peters. Arctic Edge will be able to use the ice due to the nature of their sport compared with hockey, as well as the fact the rink only needs to be flooded every few hours with figure-skating as opposed to after every period with hockey, Peters said. It is also due to the fact that Arctic Edge is running their test program. “That’s why we’re shutting everything down, so that they have good quality ice still, on the ATCO ice, for them to do the testing program.” Peters said that their technicians will be arriving from Edmonton on Monday, Dec. 9 with the replacement parts. “I expect them to be working on it Tuesday morning and hopefully be running by lunchtime on Tuesday, if everything works out,” Peters said.
Pep Guardiola has insisted he will "not give up" in his attempts to oversee a turnaround in Manchester City 's fortunes after their draw with Everton left the club with one win from their last 13 games in all competitions. City's 1-1 home draw with Everton on Boxing Day left them down in seventh place, five points off the top four and 14 adrift of leaders Liverpool , who have a game in hand. The 53-year-old, who signed a two-year contract extension last month, said frustration over poor results has not affected his desire to steer City back to their previous top form. "I will not give up. I want to do it. And with the situations that we have, we have to do it," Guardiola said after Thursday's match. "Of course I want it. Everybody wants it. I don't want to disappoint my people, in terms of the club, in terms of the fans, or the people who love this club." Guardiola said his team's shocking run of results, the worst stretch in his mostly glittering managerial career, has helped him realise how good they were on their run of winning an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles. "That makes me remember how good was the past," he said. "That's the truth, that has made me realise now what we have done, because sometimes you have injuries, and how many years we were incredibly, incredibly consistent. "But, yeah, you expect a little bit down. We didn't expect [this] much, and the main reason is having seven, eight important injured players. "But I see the team, the spirit in training, how focused they are. And we saw [progress in Saturday's] game, we saw it, but unfortunately we could not get the result that we wanted." Guardiola shook his head when asked whether his team's slump had made him even more determined to please people. "It has been since the arrival of my career as a football player, as a manager, I think every one of us in our job wants to please the people, we want to do good our jobs. That is undeniable. That is not a question mark, I would say." If City are to right the ship, the next few weeks could be the best time to do it. Sunday's match at Leicester City is the first of four successive league games against teams in the bottom half of the table.Human cost of SEND crisis: Family's six-year battle for son with autism
The American Film Institute has announced its annual Top 10 films of 2024 list and the choices are being touted as being very close to what we’ll likely see as the Oscar Best Picture nominee list when that’s announced next month. The ten that made the list for this year: “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Nickel Boys,” “A Real Pain,” “Sing Sing” and “Wicked”. Last year’s list saw eight out of ten nominated titles go on to Best Picture nominations. Going by the discussion coming out of this list so far on social media, the most contentious pick by far is Jacques Audiard’s musical crime comedy “Emilia Perez” which was a hit at Cannes. In terms of snubs, the films that seem to come up the most as being unfairly snubbed include “Challengers” and “The Substance”. The institute also announced its Top 10 TV series of 2024 with the list being: “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “A Man on the Inside,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Nobody Wants This,” “The Penguin,” “Shōgun,” “Shrinking” and “True Detective: Night Country”. Notable snubs here include “Interview with the Vampire,” “Slow Horses,” and “The Diplomat”.

The Russian citizen was working with Ukraine’s military intelligence agency and planned to detonate a bomb hidden in a portable speaker, according to Russia’s Federal Security Service. The citizen got in contact with a Ukranian Defense Ministry officer over the messaging service Telegram, received instructions and then retrieved a bomb from a hiding place in Moscow, the FSB said. Russian officials did not name the official or blogger that were being targeted. Amid the nearly-three year war following Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has said the targeted killings of those it deems guilty of war crimes are legitimate, while Russia has called them “acts of terrorism.” Earlier this month, Ukraine’s intelligence service killed a Russian lieutenant it said promoted the use of banned chemical weapons. President-elect Trump’s designated Ukraine envoy, retired Lieutenant-General Keith Kellogg, said the attacks were “not really smart” and going “a little bit too far.” Separately, the Financial Times reported that a new Russian ballistic missile fired at Ukraine in November was developed using manufacturing equipment from Western companies, despite sanctions aimed at stopping the flow of such equipment to Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the missile was in response to Ukraine’s use of Western weapons to strike Russia and that it has “stock” of such weaponry, but the report indicates that the country is still heavily dependent on foreign technology. Moscow made significant gains on the front lines in 2024, but as the war drags into its third year, some Ukrainians still hold out hope for prisoner swaps, which have dropped sharply. There were only 10 prisoner exchanges this year, the lowest number since the invasion began and over 8,000 prisoners of war are thought to still be held in Russia, according to the BBC . Families and activists gathered in Kyiv on Christmas to call for the release of Ukrainian prisoners. “We hope for a Christmas miracle,” Tetiana, whose 24-year-old son Artem was captured almost three years ago, told the outlet. “My son’s release is my deepest wish.” With Post wires
'Why fish only cut Pakistan's cable': Bilawal slams PML-N govt over 'internet slowdown' "PML-N's politics is based on motorways [...] they are infrastructure of 90s," says PPP chairman Wondering why fish only cut Pakistan's undersea internet cables, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto reminded the PML-N-led federal government that modern infrastructure revolves around digitalisation, internet, and its speed. "PML-N's politics is based on motorways [...] they are infrastructure of 90s," Bilawal, who also served as the top diplomat during Shehbaz Sharif's previous stint as prime minister, said while speaking to journalists in Ratodero. Users across various cities in Pakistan continue to face sporadic internet disruption and slow speed, resulting in difficulties with browsing, as well as downloading and sharing media. According to a list issued by Ookla Speedtest Global Index, Pakistan was ranked 100 out of 111 countries in mobile internet speeds with a download speed of 20.61Mbps and upload speed of 8.53Mbps. Meanwhile, the index ranked the country at 141 out of 158 countries in broadband speeds with a download speed of 15.60Mbps and upload speed of 15.53Mbps. Talking to media today, Bilawal — whose party is an ally of the PML-N in Centre — said they should have increased the internet speed instead of reducing it. "How can the government retract from its own statements," he asked, noting first they claimed the internet cable had been cut, later they retracted it. "Why bother with VPNs when the public doesn't even have reliable high-speed internet?" the PPP chairman asked. Responding to a question, he said that water is everyone's fundamental right and the PPP has always tried to resolve the problems being faced by the people. "We agreed that the development budget of all four provinces would be chalked out with mutual consultation," he said, adding that it seems the federal government "is not treating smaller provinces well". Furthermore, he said, the PML-N-led government lacks a mandate for "unilateral and controversial" decisions — referring to the federal government’s plan to build new canals to draw additional water from the Indus River for farming purposes. "Such projects are controversial if we move ahead in violation of the IRSA [Indus River System Authority] agreement," he added. Bilawal pointed out that Kalabagh Dam was also a unilateral decision, which the PPP did not allow to be implemented. "It is challenging to get work done from any government in Pakistan," he said, hoping that the issues of the provinces would be resolved through negotiations. He vowed that the PPP would leave no stone unturned to provide relief despite limited resources. In response to a question, the PPP chairman said that the economy was performing better "on paper", which his party welcomes. "If the economy is improving, its benefits should reach the people," he added. When asked about the pro-Imran Khan statements by United States (US) politicians, Bilawal termed them "political statements" and said those who are doing politics under the pretext of US conspiracy were "dangerous for Pakistan and its people". "Such people who play politics on conspiracies instead of focusing on public issues are dangerous for the country," he added. A day earlier, the PPP chairman said the international powers were "casting an evil eye on nuclear technology gifted by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto." Expressing annoyance over “foreign interference” in Pakistan’s internal affairs, he said: “Statements are being issued from the US about our internal politics; these statements are just excuses.” He said that the US lawmakers had nothing to do with democracy in Pakistan, adding: “PTI founder is just an excuse, their real target is Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programme.” All power centres should be part of negotiation process: Asif Forces repel 'joint attack' by Afghan Taliban, khawarij at border Karachi endures coldest night of season with mercury dropping to 8.5°C Karachi road blockades' issue likely to be resolved today: mayor
